‘Customary Christmastime Celebrations’ is a joint exhibition of traditional Christmas celebrations and customs staged at the ‘Residenzgalerie’ and ‘Dommuseum’. It is devoted to the better and lesser known customs celebrated during the advent period.
A variety of celebrations make this dark and cold time of year both contemplative and convivial. Such traditions include the customary giving of presents on St. Nicholas Day, St. Lucy’s Day festival of light or the door-to-door collection of alms at Epiphany.
The Christmas story is told via the Adoration of the Magi, the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple and several other frescos and depictions.
The exhibition in the Dommuseum ends with the birth of Christ and the chronology is picked up by the Residenzgalerie. Works loaned by monasteries and churches supplement the sculptures and paintings of both collections.
